Recently Ollie Botha represented Plimmerton at the P Class Nationals held off Takapuna in the waters of the Hauraki Gulf. This would be the first time in many years that we have had some body from Plimmerton Boating Club attend the Tauraunga Cup which has such a great history in New Zealand - with many of our most famous Yachtsman and women having cut their teeth in the class.
For Ollie national competition is a new experience and like our young sailors who attended the Opti Nth Islands in Taupo late last year Ollie also found the going tough coming up against the best of youth sailors in NZ. Ollie finished 33rd in a fleet of 39 - which included two DNFs and a DNS but among his results were some encouraging signs as the event went on, Ollie’s starts were improving so to his results in the races he was finishing. I congratulate Ollie and his family for taking on this challenge its not easy when your breaking new ground. Ollie you have done us proud and we know that what you have experienced has made you an even better sailor for the future. It can be a lonely experience if your on your own and not with a team, but you have put Plimmerton back on the scoreboard alongside of some of this countries most dynamic yacht clubs and thank you for doing that.
It is my intention that as we build the fleets at home that we will soon be traveling as a team to these events in the future. I will put up some photo’s of Ollie competing at the P Class Nationals on the Boating Club Face book page - I will forward the link once I have done this
