James Bitchener , Shania Ostenberry have just recently competed at the North Island Optimist Championships on Lake Taupo. Jack Mathews competed in the Starling class. This was the first time these kids have competed in a regatta of this standard. The purpose of the weekend was to expose them to large fleets with strong competition.
The weather was fickle with light winds and with 55 boats on the starting line you needed to be on your game. The kids learnt really fast what they need to be doing and as the regatta went on they were constantly improving. James Bitchener did us all proud with an overall finish of 13th out of a fleet of 55. Shania and Jack finish further back in the fleets but they found it a very valuable experience . The whole point was for us to go there and learn and they certainly did that.
Next year I would like to take a bigger team from Plimmerton,- so parents please watch the calendars and plan ahead, it was a really fun time and not just for the sailors but also for the parents sitting on the sideline drinking coffee.
