The poker regatta is not a race but more an activity to get us together socializing and using our boats and being part of the Club opening day.
It’s basically a game of poker where the boats will go to a set of coordinates/places. Those coordinates may be as simple as a lat and long to be found on a chart or chartplotter, or it may consist of a riddle you have to figure out to find it. When you get to these points you will be dealt a card and the idea is that after having visited 5 locations we see who has gathered the best poker hand.
The event will involve helping each other out for launches and retrieves, being safe in our boating, talking to our fellow club members both on and off the water and basically being part of a good fun club day. You may even sneak in a quick fish for a few minutes in a couple of spots!
The club will set the 5 points at sites given out at the start of the event. Some might be as simple as coming alongside another boat and getting dealt your card, others might be a little more challenging.
It will be conducted over 90 minutes in the morning of opening day with time before and after for launch and retrieves.
There wouldn’t be much point in having a contest without there being a reward. In this case there will be the obvious bragging rights, but we will also have a prize- it won’t be extravagant but I’m sure it will be desired and coveted!
Apart from doing this for our own wellbeing I think it also presents us the opportunity to give back as well to our community. To that end we will ask for a koha ($5 per person, $2 for kids) from every participant and we will make a donation to the Coastguard.
We will overlap with the start of the days sailing so we don’t all compete for the launching ramps at the same time. If it is inclement weather, we will give as much advance warning as possible regarding cancellation.
We’d love to see you there, come along and have some fun.
